EURO 2012: The money-earning machine

8 June 2012, The European Football Championship, which is due to kick off tonight at 23:30 (GMT+8), is a big money-earning machine for UEFA.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) will earn about $1.6 billion in advertising fees from 16 teams participating in the EURO 2012 from 8 June to 1 July.

Averagely, each match attracts some 150 million spectator through TV broadcast, more than America's Super Bowl. 203 media and communication agencies have signed contract with the biggest football organization in Europe, to bring Euro 2012 to every corner of the world.

Each match generates approximately $51.6 million, almost on par with World Cup 2010 when FIFA announced revenue of $3.6 billion for 64 matches, equivalent to $56.7 million per match. However, UEFA will spend part of this huge amount to assist the two hosts and as prize money.

Total amount that is given as prize money to 16 teams is $244 million, of which the champion might receive maximum of $23 million. FIFA awarded Spain $30 million for winning World Cup 2010.

UEFA assists the two hosts in organizing matches too. $49.750 is given to teams that have to travel to Poland and Ukraine by flight. Football clubs, whose players participating at EURO 2012, are compensated by UEFA, with total amount of $124 million.
